First aired during the summer on Highland Radio – presenter Mary Brophy went on a culinary tour of the county to meet the local producers bringing good food from their fields and shores, to our plates.
Recorded over six months, Mary has been travelling the county meeting pig farmers, oyster farmers, vegetable producers and restaurateurs and she’s discovered how good food isn’t just about nutrition, it’s also about community and getting back to basics.
In Ramelton, she visits the ever popular Country Markets during their busy Saturday morning rush. She’ll be trying to get the secret ingredients for some award winning sausages in Donegal town, finding out about the heritage vegetables we can grow in our gardens with gardener Dermot Carey and for those of you who fancy getting into food blogging, Mary gets some advice from food blogger and homecook Donal Skehan.But the series will also examine topics like food security; how we’re losing basic food production skills and the importance of supporting local food producers to sustain Donegal’s economy.
“We travelled the length and breadth of the county and it was a real education and fantastic to see the sheer variety on offer in the county, just what great food and food producers exist in Donegal” presenter Mary Brophy said. “The one thing they all have in common is a driving passion for quality, nutritious, locally grown food and sharing that with the rest of us.
