Letterkenny Town Council has come out against the idea of sub post offices in Gortlee and Glencar, with a majority of members saying they favour improving facilities at the Main Street post offices, particularly after sorting and parcel services move to a new centre.
A lengthy discussion followed a motion from Cllr Victor Fisher that the council erect shelters for people who find themselves out in the rain when the queue stretches beyond the front door.
When sub post offices were mentioned as a possible option, Mayor Cllr Tadhg Culbert said staff are concerned about the idea, particularly those on temporary contracts, and noone had asked their views. He clashed briefly with Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle, who said had met with union representitives.
Cllr Fisher accepted a changing of the wording of his motion, saying he fears that sub post offices would diminish the Main Street facility, and that must not be allowed happen…………..
