Derry man jailed for assaulting paramedic

Derry Magistrates Court
A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate’s Court for assaulting a paramedic.
23 year old Patrick McCallion of 15, Capall Court in Derry admitted the offences which occurred on July 5.
The court heard that at 8 a.m. police were called to assist paramedics who were dealing with an ‘intoxicated male’.
When they arrived they found McCallion standing in a garden of a house shouting and spitting at paramedics.
The court heard that McCallion had no connection with the house but believed it to be his address and had been kicking and banging on the door.
Eventually he was persuaded to accompany the ambulance staff to the ambulance but then became aggressive and lashed out at one paramedic who had to put his arm up to protect himself.
He was restrained and continued to struggle with police trying to bite one officer and headbutt another.
Defence solicitor Mr. Paddy MacDermott said his client accepted his behaviour was ‘completely unacceptable.’
He said that McCallion had sustained a serious head injury around this time and was on medication and should not have consumed alcohol.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that it was an assault on a paramedic and sentenced McCallion to three months in prison.
