Agriculture Minister Michael Creed has confirmed he is setting up a scheme to alleviate the costs of transporting fodder to farmers in Donegal and the North West.
Details of a scheme had been expected on Monday when the minister came to Sligo for a meeting of the Fodder Action Group. The meeting was told 85% of farmers in the region are now experiencing fodder shortages.
Farm bodies are welcoming the commitment, but are stressing the main priority remains a Meal Voucher Scheme.
Minister Joe McHugh said the transport subsidy is one of a number of measures being brought in by Minister Creed to help farmers struggling to deal with difficult weather conditions since the autumn, and specific details will be confirmed in the coming days.
