Ronan Curtis returned from injury on Sunday to help Portsmouth win the CheckatradeTrophy for the first time at Wembley.
Pompey came from behind to force extra-time and took the lead with five minutes to go, before Aiden McGeady’s second goal of the game sent the tie to spot kicks.
Portsmouth triumphed 5-4 on penalties, with Lee Cattermole the only player to miss.
Former Derry City man Curtis lined out for the first time since severing his finger which he trapped in a door.
