Detectives in Coleraine are appealing for witnesses to establish how a man located in the vicinity of the Foreglen Road, Claudy yesterday evening sustained his injuries.
A man is in custody, with police exploring the possibility that the incident is linked to the earlier theft of a van nearby.
Police say they received a report shortly after 5:15 last evening that an injured man had been found in a layby in the area.
Officers attended the scene, along with the ambulance service, and the man, aged in his forties, was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
A man in his thirties, was later arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.
Police in Coleraine say their enquiries are an early stage, but, they believe this incident may be linked to the report of a white Ford Transit van stolen from an address on Foreglen Road at 5.05pm.
Police say when the road was very busy at the time, and they are particularly anxious to hear from motorists who may have dash cam footage that captures what occurred, or captures the white van being driven on the road.
