Nearly €116 million was overpaid by the Department of Social Protection last year.
The department’s annual report for 2023 states 632,000 welfare claims were reviewed by civil servants.
Around 430 of those cases were referred for prosecution, while over 91,000 inspections were carried out in reviews of income support schemes and PRSI compliance.
