Gardaí have issued advice to homeowners as part of their Winter Burglary Prevention programme.
In winter, they see burglaries increase by 25% and over 40% occur between 5pm and 11pm.
Gardaí are encouraging all homeowners to review their home security regularly.
Whether you are at home or going out, remember to turn on some lights and use timer switches.
They are advising people to:
- Lock all doors and windows
- Use an alarm even when you are in the house
- Store keys away from windows and letterboxes
- Don’t keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in the house
- Ensure that the exterior of your home is well lit up
- Do not post to social media about any upcoming holidays/trips
- Notify Gardaí if your home is going to be vacant
Homeowners are also being encouraged to always report any suspicious activity in your area to Gardaí immediately.
