Irish soldier from Derry to be sentenced next month after being found guilty of rape

An Irish soldier from Derry is to be sentenced next month after being found guilty of three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The victim, in her victim impact statement said the actions of 30 year old Kielan Mooney with an address at Bloomfield Park, Derry, made her suicidal.

Last week, Mooney was found guilty of the attack at a Dublin hotel in July 2021.

At a pre-sentencing hearing yesterday, the court heard that prosecutors have suggested a sentence of 10 to 15 years.

According to BBC News, in her victim impact statement the woman said her life was just beginning when she was assaulted by the Irish soldier.

She says what happened changed her life and that she wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

The victim said the rape had taken a toll on her mental health.

Mooney, who had seven signed affidavits towards his character from members of his family and community, will now be placed on the sex offenders register.

Sentencing has been adjourned until January 20th.
