EU hears call for urgent housing reforms to protect Irish language in Gaeltacht areas

Midlands Northwest MEP Ciarán Mullooly has urged the Taoiseach to immediately publish the Gaeltacht housing blueprint, highlighting the urgent need for planning reforms.

Speaking in the European Parliament, he argued that the delay threatens both housing provision and the survival of the Irish language in regions like Donegal.

Mullooly emphasised that unchecked property acquisitions are displacing young, Irish-speaking locals and warned that discriminatory planning policies risk the permanent loss of the Irish language in Gaeltacht areas:
