A number of people have been killed and four others have been injured after a car was driven the wrong way on the M9 in County Kildare.
A head-on collision with another car happened near Junction 3 Athy when the car was driven southbound on the northbound carriageway of the M9 motorway at about 3 o’clock this morning.
Gardaí say a number of people have died, but have yet to release further details.
Four people travelling in the second car have been seriously injured.
The driver and front-seat passenger, both women aged in their 30s, are in a critical condition – they were rushed to Tallaght University Hospital.
A woman in her 20s and a child, who were back-seat passengers, were taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital and CHI Crumlin in a serious condition.
Part of the motorway is currently closed.
Fiosrú has confirmed it’s received a referral from Gardaí in relation to the crash.
An independent investigation has been launched and a member of Fiosrú’s on-call team has attended the scene.
