A petition has been launched to stop the proposed closure of St Columba’s Primary School in Newbuildings.
Last week the Council of Catholic Maintained Schools submitted a proposal to the Education Authority to close the school, which opened in 1955.
The submission, if successful, would see the school close on August 31, 2027.
Despite pupil numbers dropping the Parents and Governors of St Columba’s believe that with the growth of the village there is renewed potential within the school.
The petition has received just under 2,000 signatures so far, with public and political figures like Foyle MP Colum Eastwood supporting the petition.
