Donegal County Council has confirmed 21 prospective presidential election candidates have contacted the council directly seeking nominations.
Officials say others may have been in touch with members on an individual basis, and they are currently awaiting confirmation from the elected members of any proposed meeting to consider the issue.
We understand Cathaoirleach Paul Canning is in discussions with the party whips to determine the council’s approach.
