As counting continues in the St John Bosco Centre in Donegal Town, Independent candidate Roger Meehan has now been eliminated in the sixth count following the distribution of the votes of Diarmaid Doherty. The count is now on its seveth round with Independent Niamh Kennedy on 1,682 leading Sinn Fein’s Noel Jordan who has 1,609.

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council has lost his seat. Fianna Fail’s Seamus O’Domhnaill has been eliminated after failing to secure transfers from his running mate Enda Bonner, who also lost his seat. Mr O’Domhnaill, who topped the poll in 2014, ended up with 1222 votes.

Fianna Fail’s strategy in the Glenties Electoral Area will come under the microscope after the election count, with sitting councillors Enda Bonner and Seamus O’Domhnaill set to lose their seats according to observers at the count. There are severe traffic delays in the vicinity of Drumkeen following a collision, with traffic travelling from Letterkenny towards Ballybofey particularly badly affected. There are no reports of serious injuries, but emergency services are at the scene, and gardai are assessing the situation.

Ciaran Brogan has been elected on the first count in Letterkenny, 106 above the quota. Sinn Fein’s difficulty in the area highlighted by the fact that Gerry Mc Monagle and Adrian Glackin are just 40 votes apart. Speaking after his election, Greg Hughes spoke to Ciaran Brogan……..  

There’s still some way to go to a first count in the Donegal Electoral Area, with some predictions that it could be as late as 6pm. The destination of the first four seats seems sure, with Noel Jordan of Sinn Fein and Independent Niamh Kennedy neck and neck on 1400 votes, but Jordan slightly ahead.

A 32 year old man detained in the Strabane area yesterday has been released and immediately re-arrested. Police say the man had been arrested by detectives from PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit on suspicion of membership of a proscribed organisation.
