Counting has concluded in Lifford Stranorlar with outgoing Councillors Frank Mc Brearty and Liam Doherty both elected. There are severe traffic delays in the vicinity of Drumkeen following a collision, with traffic travelling from Letterkenny towards Ballybofey particularly badly affected. There are no reports of serious injuries, but emergency services are at the scene, and gardai are assessing the situation.

Ciaran Brogan has been elected on the first count in Letterkenny, 106 above the quota. Sinn Fein’s difficulty in the area highlighted by the fact that Gerry Mc Monagle and Adrian Glackin are just 40 votes apart. Speaking after his election, Greg Hughes spoke to Ciaran Brogan……..  

There’s still some way to go to a first count in the Donegal Electoral Area, with some predictions that it could be as late as 6pm. The destination of the first four seats seems sure, with Noel Jordan of Sinn Fein and Independent Niamh Kennedy neck and neck on 1400 votes, but Jordan slightly ahead.

Three candidates have been elected on the first count in Buncrana, Paul Canning and Rena Donaghey of Fianna Fail, and Jack Murray of Sinn Fein. A 32 year old man detained in the Strabane area yesterday has been released and immediately re-arrested. Police say the man had been arrested by detectives from PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit on suspicion of membership of a proscribed organisation. Ireland has voted overwhelmingly to ease restrictions on divorce and recognise foreign divorces. In a landslide vote – the second biggest since the Good Friday agreement – the country voted 82% Yes to 18% No in the divorce referendum. The result was announced at 4.30 am this morning.
