The SDLP has made representation in Dublin for the retention of the Malin Coast Guard Station with a Derry representative now positive that the station will be retained.
A report published earlier this month by Fisher Consultants on the marine emergency response regimes proposed that Malin be closed.
Under the proposals presented to government, Dublin would be made the main coastguard centre with reduced functions at Valentia and Malin becoming obsolete.
East Derry SDLP MLA John Dallatt was in Dublin this week where he impressed on senior government representatives the cross border importance of Malin Coastguard.
Mr Dallatt says that is an aspect ignored in the Fisher Consultants reports:
