The North’s Environment Minister Alex Attwood has ordered the closure of a major waste plant in Derry following an investigation into allegations of large scale criminal offences involving how waste there was handled and disposed of.
Mr Atwood told Highland Radio News today that the scale of the unlawful activity was immense, and dates back at least until 2009.
According to Mr Atwood, hundreds of thousands of tons of waste have been illegally deposited in a number of areas of land in the Mobouy area, just outside Derry, on a scale which he described as “organized crime”.
A ‘Waste Crime Taskforce’ has now been created, and Alex Atwood says Operation Sycamore will continue……….
