Plans for new leisure centre in Strabane get go-ahead

Strabane District Council looks sets to push ahead with the construction of a new multi-million pound leisure facility.
Consultants told Cllrs earlier this week that the current facility, Riversdale Leisure Centre, was no longer fit for purpose.
Consultants said that if moves were not made to replace Riversdale, then it would eventually close itself.
V4 Services Ltd and Strategic Leisure were drafted in earlier this year to assess the need for a new fitness facility in Strabane and to identify a possible site.
Consultants identified a number of issues with Riversdale including its age and condition, the lack of capacity, limited parking and poor disabled access.
In their feasibility study the firms proposed that Strabane District Council move ahead with a brand new 4,000sq metre facility comprising two swimming pools, fitness suite and cafe.
to the actual centre should be a floodlit grass pitch, bowling green, children’s play park, car parking and full disability access.
Such a project would come with a price tag of between £10m and £11.5m.
