Harkin says new EU proposals will force a rethink on windfarm expansion plans

Marian Harkin
New EU proposals on energy targets may seriously jeopardise pylon and windfarm expansion plans according to North West MEP Marian Harkin.
She says the EU Commission will shortly announce new energy proposals that will lessen the need for EU states to source energy from renewable supplies such as wind energy.
Up until now, the EU had set a binding target that Europe would get 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. However, that’s due to change, with the Commission planning to limit its binding targets to energy emissions.
Ms Harkin says that will have a direct impact on Irish plans to sell more renewable energy supplies to Britain, and that in turn means windfarm plans will have to be re-examined………..
