Cycling’s Giro d’Italia reaches Italy today.
Having spent the opening weekend in Ireland the first Italian stage is a 112 kilometre race ending with several circuits of the city of Bari.
Letterkenny’s Philip Deignan is 40th in overall general classification 49 seconds behind the leader Australia’s Michael Matthews.
Philip has praised the Irish support as the Giro got off to a spectacular start in front of massive crowds.
Team Sky enjoyed great support during their stay, but it was Deignan who drew the loudest cheer as the man from County Donegal began his first Grand Tour with the team.
“I had high expectations having seen the crowds back in 1998 and considering how much the sport has grown since then. It’s incredible and it’s really lived up to what I hoped it would be. Talking to the other riders they said they’ve never seen crowds like that except for at the Tour de France.”
“It’s been an amazing three days.”
