It’s emerged that 70,000 Housing Executive homes in Northern Ireland have asbestos present in their structure.
A Freedom of Information request on the state of houses owned by the Housing Executive was submitted by the political blog “Beyond the Pillars”.
The answer revealed that in the Coleraine area, there was a recorded high of 198 houses with asbestos present, which have since been treated.
Asbestos is present in 71% of the Housing Executive’s properties. It’s use is now banned, but asbestos remains in many schools, hospitals, offices and factories built in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Every year around 4,000 people die from asbestos related illnesses in the uk.
The Housing Executive has said that there is a programme in place to manage asbestos and have stressed that in the majority of properties it is low-risk and only poses a risk if disturbed.
