The Saolta Hospital Group has confirmed there were two unconnected cases of Necrotizing Fascilitis, the so-called “flesh eating disease” at Letterkenny University Hospital earlier this year.
The infections came to light following the publication of a stroy in today’s Donegal Democrat.
The statement says the condition is a relatively rare one, and is not a contagious infection, so other patients were not at risk.
Both infections happened in the maternithy ward, several weeks apart. Saolta says as the infection occured post delivery, there was no risk to the baby in either case.
