Four coastal areas included for funding in Coastal Erosion programme

Four coastal areas in West and South West Donegal have been included in the latest round of funding under the Minor Works and Coastal Erosion programme.
A specialist is to be appointed to examine the effects erosion is having in the areas around Magheraroarty, Gweebarra Bay, Inisfree Bay and Maghery.
Councillors have been told in a briefing that funding has been provided under the Minor Works & Coastal Erosion programme to the council for the study. It will involve an examination of current processes affecting the Donegal coastline and risks to the areas of concern.
There’s been a lot of focus on Magheroarty in recent years, with this study xxamining the coastline from Currans Port, Magheroarty Beach, Ballyness bay to the end of Drumnatinney beach)
Gweebarra Bay is included, incorporating the area around Portnoo pier, Narin Beach, Gweebarra Bay, and Dooey Beach.
The study will also look at Maghery, examining the coastline from the Coast Road on either side of the beach itself, and the entire Carrickfinn Peninsula around Inishfree Bay.
Officials say these coastlines are of high conservation value because of the extensive areas of relatively unspoilt coastal habitats and the range of plant and animal species that these habitats support.
Tender documents are now being prepared to appoint a consultant to conduct the survey work.
