Tyrone manager Mickey Harte is set to recall a number of former players to his squad as he seeks to add extra attacking flair to his challenge for honours in 2019.
Darren McCurry, Kyle Coney and Shay McGuigan are all poised to revive their careers with a return to the Red Hand set-up, and could feature in next month’s Dr McKenna Cup campaign.
All three were back in the county fold at the weekend as Harte held trials which also featured a number of young prospects who have impressed on the club scene in the past year.
McCurry opted out of the squad last March, citing work commitments, and missed out on the team’s run to the All-Ireland final, which ended in defeat to Dublin.
He was in sparkling form for Edendork in recent weeks during a run to the Tyrone SFC semi-finals, and has been persuaded to resurrect his inter-county career.
Ardboe pair Coney and McGuigan have been away from the inter-county scene for some time, and neither has played for the Red Hands since 2015, but have been handed a chance to revive their careers.
McGuigan was one of half a dozen players who left the squad in the middle of the 2015 season, citing a lack of game time opportunity, but he too has been showing exceptional form in club football, and was top scorer in this year’s championship.
Coney was omitted from the Red Hand squad earlier in 2015, and his last appearance was in the Dr McKenna Cup final win over Cavan. It looked like his Tyrone career was over, but he too has been handed another chance to display his talents on the big stage.
