A Cork TD is arguing that a standalone university in Derry would promote and better facilitate a larger programme of North-South student exchanges.
Fine Gael TD Colm Burke says expanding university provision in Derry would provide additional opportunities and more choice for students.
He believes an independent university with cross border links would encourage more Northern Ireland students to apply in the republic, and facilitate shared courses.
