Fishermen in ‘dire situation’ due to cost of fuel

The Chief Executive of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation says fishermen are in a dire situation due to the ongoing fuel crisis.

The average fishing trawler is now paying 70% more for diesel since March 2022 to remain at sea to ear a living.

Chief Executive of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation, Sean O’Donoghue, says approximately half of members gross earnings are now gone on putting fuel in the boats.

Mr O’Donoghue says a fuel support package is not available for fishermen in Ireland and has called on the government to act swiftly to rectify this..
