Derry City have closed the gap to SSE Airtricity Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers to a single point.
A superb first-half free kick from Will Patching saw the Candystripes beat Sligo Rovers 1-nil at the Ryan McBride Brandywell.
Rovers still have two games in hand over Derry, and the sides meet in the FAI Cup on Sunday.
