Almost €1 million allocated to Donegal under the Shared Island Initiative

Almost a million euro has been allocated to Donegal County Council for five projects under the Shared Island Local Authority Development Funding.

Each of the projects sees the council with a council north of the border, three of them with Derry City and Strabane and two with Fermanagh and Omagh.

The three projects being run with Derry City and Strabane District Council involve a feasibility for a cross-border Exemplar Decarbonised Public Transportation project to promote carbon-neutral journeys in Donegal and Derry, a North West Regulatory Technology Cluster, and the a feasibility study on the development of the Slí Cholmcille pilgrimage route.

The two projects involving Fermanagh and Omagh District Council are a feasibility study into cross border Innovation Plazas in Ballyshannon and Irvinestown, and a cross-border Tourism Regeneration Project along the Donegal-Fermanagh rural border region.

The five projects, to be advanced in the next 12 months, will receive a total amount of €976,000.

Minister Charlie McConalogue says the Shared Island initiative is vitally important in fostering partnerships throughout the island, and the five projects in Donegal are an example of what can be achieved when groups and bodies work together positively for all the people in our cross border counties.
