LUH one of five hospitals worst-hit by overcrowding

Letterkenny University Hospital is one of the worst-hit hospitals in the country by overcrowding.

That’s according to the INMO whose latest figures show 5,366 people waited on a trolley at the hospital so far this year.

100,195 patients have gone without beds in Irish hospitals in 2022 so far, according to the INMO. 1,903 children were on trolleys.

Of the five worst-hit hospitals, Letterkenny University Hospital ranks fifth.

To date, 2,394 patients were on a trolley in the hospital’s Emergency Department this year and 2,972 were waiting on a bed in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The INMO is calling for a four-pronged approach to tackle overcrowding and the recruitment and retention crisis.

It includes; the cancellation of non-urgent elective care in public hospitals and use of private hospitals instead, the introduction of retention measures including provision of accommodation for essential workers particularly in rent pressure zones.

The INMO also wants legislation to be introduced to underpin the implementation of safe staffing and skill mix framework and the prioritisation of funding for public delivered long term care in the community.
