Donegal County Council has conducted a total of 18 investigations into suspected illegal short-term lets in the county over the past 3 years.
According to figures obtained by the Irish Independent, 4 investigations have been carried out so far this year, 9 last year, and 5 in 2023.
1,617 investigations were opened since 2023 into properties across the country suspected of breaching planning laws around short-term lets.
Owners who rent out their property for short-term or holiday letting for more than 90 days a year must secure planning permission to do so.
The only enforcement action taken in the majority of cases was sending a warning letter to owners.
