
The Sustainable Water Network is calling for a ban on open-net salmon farming in Ireland.
The group, which represents 26 environmental organisations, says the practice risks breaching Ireland’s obligations under EU water and marine legislation.
In a new report, SWAN claims open-net salmon farming ‘cannot be carried out sustainably’ because of its impact on water quality, wild fish stocks and marine habitats.
The report also says Ireland’s Wild Salmon population has fell by 90% since 1970.
