‘Bravado brought on by too much alcohol’ cited in inquest into death of Tyrone man in Cork

An inquest into the death of a 25-year-old father-of-one in Cork last year, has heard he joked about jumping into the River Lee and told his friend he could not swim.

The body of Shea McCabe from Pomeroy in County Tyrone was discovered nine days after he entered the water after midnight on the 18th of December last.

Shea McCabe was walking across Brian Boro bridge with his friend when he said ‘something along the lines of ‘would it be funny if I jumped in?’

His friend said he told him to ‘wise up’ and to continue towards a bar.

The inquest heard Shea McCabe said ‘Watch this’, threw his possessions out of his pockets and jumped head over heels into the water.

Coroner Philip Comyn said it appeared to be a case of bravado brought on by too much alcohol and said Mr McCabe went about an escapade and a bit of fun that had tragic consequences.
