(HSE Statement: Buncrana Community Hospital)

HSE West and North West welcomes the publication of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report following its unannounced inspection of Buncrana Community Hospital on 11 June 2026, which focused specifically on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).

Buncrana Community Hospital, managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE), provides care and support to meet the needs of both male and female older persons requiring long-term care, including continuing and dementia care, as well as short-term care, including assessment, rehabilitation, convalescence and respite care. There were 10 residents living in the centre on the day of the inspection.

The report included a number of positive findings in relation to the care provided at the hospital, including positive feedback from residents, good standards of care planning and access to healthcare services. The inspector also found that there were sufficient nursing and care staff to meet the needs of residents at the time of the inspection.

Of the 12 regulations assessed, eight were found to be fully compliant, three substantially compliant and one, Regulation 17 – Premises, non-compliant.

The actions identified in relation to the three substantially compliant regulations have been addressed. The requirements identified under Regulation 17 – Premises will be addressed through the hospital’s planned refurbishment programme.

The HSE remains committed to providing safe, high-quality care to residents at Buncrana Community Hospital and to progressing the actions identified through the inspection process.
