Compliance jumps by 20% at LUH psychiatry department

The Mental Health Commission has published its Annual Inspection Report 2026, examining quality, safety and human rights in the Department of Psychiatry at Letterkenny University Hospital.

The report records a 20% increase in compliance compared with last year, although five high-risk non-compliances were also identified.

An inspection carried out in March found an overall compliance rate of 81%, up from 61% last year, with 28 residents present at the time.

Five high-risk non-compliances were recorded, relating to visits, individual care plans, privacy, premises and the use of physical restraint.

Residents spoken to by the inspectors praised the food, access to a key nurse, group activities and regular meetings with the multidisciplinary team.

A survey of ten residents found all felt they could discuss concerns with staff, while seven said there were enough leisure activities available.

Eight were happy with how staff spoke to them.
