Box Cup is honouring Peter O’Donnell in the best way possible

Hundreds of young boxers from across Ulster and beyond will converge on Donegal this weekend for the inaugural Peter O’Donnell Box Cup.

The tournament, in memory of ‘Mr Boxing’ Peter O’Donnell will fittingly take place on the weekend of his first anniversary.

The first Peter O’Donnell Box Cup will be held in the Clonmany Community Centre and will see schoolboys, schoolgirls, youth, junior and under-19 boxers take to the squared circle.

Over 350 fighters have entered from 62 clubs, including England and Scotland with 12 Donegal clubs represented.

98 semi finals will take place on Saturday and 122 finals on Sunday with the action in Clonmany starting at 12noon each day over three rings.

It’s the first time ever that three rings will be in operation at a competition in the north west.

The County Donegal Boxing Board hope that the Peter O’Donnell Box Cup can become one of the biggest on this island.

Peter dreamed of bringing a Box Cup to Donegal and to show Donegal as a true powerhouse of Irish boxing.

Speaking with Highland’s Oisin Kelly, Donegal Boxing Board President James McCarron says they are honouring the man himself in the best way possible…
