Bill to alter the Triple Lock passes second stage

The Government has won a Dáil vote on controversial plans to scrap the Triple Lock governing overseas deployments of Irish troops.

The Defence Amendment Bill passed its Second Stage by 79 votes to 71 last night.

The legislation would remove the requirement for UN Security Council approval before certain overseas missions.

The Bill has not yet become law – it must still pass further stages in the Dáil and Seanad before being signed by the President.
