An independent investigation is to be held in Northern Ireland following outbreaks of pseudomonas that killed four babies in hospitals there in the last two months.
Earlier today Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan backed a Derry families calls for a public inquiry.
One child died from the infection at Altnagelvin Hospital in December, while three other babies died at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast earlier this month.
Gavin Burke and Caoimhe Campbell – the parents of 10-day-old Caolan, who died in Altnagelvin Hospital – had earlier called for a public inquiry.
This morning the Northern Ireland Health Minister, Edwin Poots, stopped short of that but said the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority would carry out an independent investigation.
The health authorities have been asked if enough was done to warn other hospitals about the outbreak of the infection at Altnagelvin.
Water taps were identified as being the source of the infection at both hospitals.
