A Fianna Fail County Councillor believes Gynecology Services have improved at Letterkenny General Hospital as a result of recent changes.
Gynae services were relocated within in the hospital last Monday with a reduction in beds from thirteen to six.
The issue has been discussed at today’s meeting of Donegal County Council. Sinn Fein proposed a motion calling on the council to condemn the changes to gynae services condemning them as a ‘barbaric act’ Party Councillor Cora Harvey says the decision much be immediately reversed.
But Fianna Fail are split on the issue – Councillor Dessie Larkin says the move was morally wrong and has been told that people that have used the service this week have expressed concern over their privacy. His party colleague Ciaran Brogan says the hospital still has an excellent gynae service which he believes will now be further enhanced.
Councillor Brogan says there has been a great deal of scaremongering and that the message should go out to the public that a quality services still remains.
Fine Gael agrees, the party says services have not been reduced – Councillor Barry O’Neill says people are playing politics with the issue. He says the facts are that the services are the same.
Councillor Dessie Larkin says Fine Gael, Labour and his party colleague are attempting to defend the indefensible.
The motion was passed without a counter motion or amendment.
