Gardai tell Letterkenny JPC that crime is down with two exceptions

Crime is generally down in Letterkenny, but there have been increases in burglaries and thefts from the person.
Inspector David Kelly told a meeting of the town’s Joint Policing Committee last night there have been 214 reported burglaries so far this year compared to 205 over the same period last year.
Thefts from the person are also up, from 6 last year to 19 so far this year.
Theft is also down, from 208 last year to 173 this year, while there have been 102 thefts from shops, compared to 150 in 2011.
Car theft is also down, with 74 cars stolen this year compared to 107 in the same period last year.
Thefts from cars were also down from 125 to 60.
Assaults are down, with 268 this year compared with 305 over the same period last year ; assaults causing harm are also down from 61 to 52.
There’s also been a slight drop in reported cases of criminal damage, from 339 last year to 337 this year.
Inspector Kelly says incidents of crime can be reduced further if people are more alert……
