Donegal County Council has issued road safety advice as schools prepare to reopen.
They say every small action helps in ensuring children make it to school safely.
Donegal County Council has this advice:
- Parents must talk to their children about safe walking, cycling and bus travel
- Seatbelts, bikes in working order, helmets and reflective gear equate to safer journeys
- Parents driving their children to school must avoid being distracted by phones
- Drivers must slow down near schools, watch for students entering or leaving buses and give yourself extra time for your journey
The authority says people can improve safety in school areas by:
- Using a school bus or carpooling
- Parking nearby and walking or cycling the rest of the way
- Planning your route in advance and parking responsibly – never blocking entrances, driveways or access routes
