The man accused of killing his grandfather in Gweedore over two years ago has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Derek Mulligan (39), of Carrickcoyle, Doirí Beaga, Gaoth Dobhair, is said to have long suffered from mental health difficulties. His legal team also told the court he was the victim of sexual abuse as a child.
He is accused of killing his grandfather, 78-year-old Derek Burns, at Carrickcoyle on the 19th of December 2023.
The defence says expert psychiatrists for both the State and the defence agree he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time.
The trial continues tomorrow.
