The majority of crèches have waiting lists of over a year.
That’s according to an Irish Independent survey, which found that out of 142 crèches, 117 had waiting lists of over one year.
Some providers say they have over 200 children looking for a place, with some parents calling looking for creche places from the hospital after giving birth, or even while pregnant.
The average monthly fee for a place is now €845 before state subsidies apply.
