A woman from Manorcunningham is to become the first woman to serve as President of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
Sr Mary T Barron OLA has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as Adjunct Secretary for the Dicastery of Evangelization, with the new role taking effect on January 4th.
It is her second papal appointment this year, after she was appointed as one of 19 members of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue in January.
Sr Mary, who is Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Apostles, has travelled extensively with her congregation and spent many years in Ghana. She will now move to Rome.
She says she is particularly honoured to represent Ireland’s long missionary tradition and the many women who have contributed to the Church’s missionary work.
