1-in-18 people were a victim of crime last year.
That is despite an average drop in crime rates throughout Ireland since the beginning of the recession.
The findings are part of a report published by the Irish Examiner. It also found that Dublin has the highest rate of crime in the country followed by Limerick, while Kerry is one of the safest places to live.
Sean McCarthaigh from the Irish Examiner says the figures also threw up some interesting findings.
“Burglaries – there’s a much higher rate running down the eastern seaboard running down; Louth surprisingly has the highest rate, but after that you’re talking Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Wexford” he said.
“What gardai have suggested in the past – that crime gangs (are) using the road network to go out into neighbouring counties to carry out burglaries”.
“And the other thing that struck us with the Garda staffing levels is that in the whole south-east area, they have quite (a) low level of gardai” he added.
