Fianna Fail Councillors seek 3% cut in Letterkenny commercial rates

Letterkenny Town Council has instructed officials to write a 3% reduction in the commercial rate into the budget for next year, but only after Mayor Cllr Tadhg Culbert used his casting vote.
The motion was moved by Cllr Dessie Larkin, and supported by his Fianna Fail colleagues.
The other members in the chamber said they would like to see a decrease, but would need to see the figures in the budget book before deciding on a 3% reduction when the budget meeting takes place on December 22nd.
The meeting was told each 1% drop in rates represents a €50,000 droop in income.
Cllr Larkin says if the 3% decrease isn’t written into the estimates before the budget meeting, then programmes would have to be cut to secure a decrease.
He’s surprised he didn’t secure wider support.
