Soccer – Derry City 1st Division Champions

League Of Ireland First Division
Monaghan Utd 0 v 1 Derry City
Derry City were crowned First Division Champions on Saturday night after their win against promotion chasing Monaghan United at Gortakeegan. Mark Farren scored the only goal of the game with ten minutes left in play. The victory was enough for the Candystrips to stay top of the table and make their return to the Premier Division in 2011. It was an emotional night for Farren who may never play again for Derry. The Greencastle lad will now put his career on hold as he bids to overcome health problems. Staff and players paid tribute to their star striker and wore commemorative t-shirts with “ There’s only one Mark Farren” on them during the presentation. At one stage during the campaign Derry looked to be in danger of losing the league after throwing away a twelve point lead. Following that rocky patch Stephen Kenny rallied his men to take 14 points from 18 in their last six games to deservedly win the title.
