Soccer – Derry drop to 2nd after Sligo draw

Derry City and Sligo Rovers shared the spoils after playing out a 1-1 draw at The Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. The result means Derry are still three points clear of their north west rivals but with Shamrock Rovers beating Dundalk 2-1, The Candystrips have dropped to second in the standings two points behind the Hoops.  Joseph Ndo gave Sligo the lead with a fantastic strike on 14 minutes. Sligo were subjected to a spell of serious pressure from Derry at one stage in the first-half but it was on the counter-attack that Derry equalised. A fantastic individual effort from Stephen McLaughlin was fired in to the net, with a bit of help from a deflection off Gavin Peers. The second half was less action-packed and neither side managed to net the winning goal. In the end a draw was probably a fair result. Derry have now extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games.
