Donegal’s Karl Lacey is hoping for inclusion in the Irish team which will be named next week for the rules series against the Australians. The Four Masters man who last played for Ireland in the 2006 series, has been training with an extended panel for the last three weekends in Dublin and is determined to make the cut when Anthony Tohill trims his squad back to 23 for the trip Down Under. Karl was one of seven Donegal players who were yesterday named among the 45 nominees for the 2011 GAA/GPA All Star Awards. The other six Donegal nominees are Paul Durkan, Neil McGee, Frank McGlynn, Kevin Cassidy, Michael Murphy and Colm McFadden. Sean Cavanagh and Joe McMahon of Tyrone have also been chosen and the only other Ulster county player in the list is Derry forward Eoin Bradley. All-Ireland winners Dublin have 12 players selected along with nine from beaten finalists Kerry. The Player of the Month awards during the championship were also handed out on Tuesday with Karl picking up his accolade for July.
For Lacey its going to be a tense few weeks with the Irish team being named and the All Star awards on October 21st.
