The government has been ordered to change the VRT regieme following a European Commission ruling that the amounts being imposed on some vehicles do not comply with European Union law.
The commission said it was wrong and unfair that people who import vehicles under three months old, or with less than 3,000km on the clock, have to pay the same as is charged for a brand new vehicle.
This is the latest in a number of rulings on the back of cases taken by the Irish Drivers Association and Donegal campaigner Ryan Stewart.
Mr Stewart says rather than taking what he termed a shotgun approach, they’ve been methodical in the way they’ve approached the issue.
As a result, he believes the days of VRT are numbered………
