The Committee on Fisheries in the European Parliament has voted by 13 to10 in favour of amending the Common Fisheries Policy, including a provision to provide more resources and quota allocations fopr the small scale sector.
Ireland’s member on the Committee, North West MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher, says it’s a first but significant step.
He says decisions regarding discards and regional decision making are to be welcomed, and he’s particularly glad that his amendment, which relates particularly to offshore islands, received the backing of the Committee.
Mr Gallagher says once the parliament endorses the recommendations early next year, the committee will then enter into discussions with the Council of Ministers.
Significantly, he says, that will happen during the Irish presidency………
