Gardai identify mystery girl found in Dublin

Police in Australia have confirmed they have been in contact with gardaí after a girl found in Dublin last month was identified as a 20-year-old Australian student.
They have described the situation as “a private matter” and they will not be commenting further because she has not been arrested or charged with anything.
Gardaí initially believed the girl was about 14-years-old and were concerned that she may have been the victim of child-trafficking.
Public Affairs Editor with the Irish Independent is Shane Phelan. He says gardaí are now learning more about the girl’s background.
“It now appears quite certain that she in fact came here of her own free will – she may have been visiting distant relatives” he said.
“An acquaintance of her family who knew her and knew relatives of her in Australia recognised  the photograph and he contacted the incident room at Store Street with the information”.
“Gardai were quickly able to confirm it be liasing with colleagues in Australia” he added.
